1Step Forward, 2Steps Back #baksteps
a netprov

The Big Idea
1Step Forward, 2Steps Back (#baksteps), a netprov is a collaborative storytelling game that explores digital fitness culture. Players pretend to have adopted the sport of Bakstepping (walking backwards) and other backwards activities, Tweeting their statistical progress toward their goals — or, rather, their regress away from them — to the Twitter hashtag #baksteps.
Their Tweets to others in the bakstepping community (including their personal strainers) take the form of humble-bragging, jealous-encouragement, and pouring out their innermost doubts in posts called “selflogs.”
Hard as they try, baksteppers seem always to be falling away from the target. Inevitably, the Bakstepping describes the arcs of their personal lives as well.
Meanwhile… the mysterious #baksteps tracking algorithm appears to encourage while it constantly morphs the finish line. This netprov is a comical meditation on our data self-image, the chore of self-improvement, and how we keep score.
You’re Always Only 1 Bakstep Away From Happiness!!
Want to really Feel the Burn?
Then why “Work Out”
when you can “Burn Out”
…at Bakstepping?!
The #baksteps Philosophy
There’s just no better way to get back to the you you left behind!
Yes, you remember the old you! So attractive! So — so– (what’s the word?) not as old as you are now! Surely, the before-you was better than the now-you and can’t be compared to the future-you!
What if you could work your way back to the you that got you into this mess? And with every step you distance yourself from where you should have started!!
